“With Scarves of Red Tied Round Their Throats, To Keep Their Little Heads, From Falling In The Snow” - graphite and red ink on bristol
This piece took fooooreeevvveeeerrrrrrr.  But I’m excited I finally managed to put this idea down on paper.
From the very first time I listened to “White Winter Hymnal” by Fleet Foxes I had this image of a pack of foxes with red scarves running through a snowy woodscape.  This idea then evolved to a pack of fox children running through the woods, some having changed back to foxes, others still in the form of children, but with tails and ears showing what they truly are… Maybe they used to be highly mischievous children and were cursed by an old witch who turned them into foxes.  But their energetic spirit would allow them to shape-shift back to their child forms to pull pranks and cause some trouble. I could just see them changing into children to head into town and cause some mischief, only to have to bolt right back into the woods after getting caught by the townsfolk.  This goes on for ages and ages as they have no “cure” or means to break the curse.  Meaning they have to be constantly on the run from the farmers and townsfolk who see them as nothing more than a destructive force to their crops and the peace of their villages.  However, the true curse is the red scarf.  They all have to wear red scarves to hold their heads in place.  As soon as the red scarf comes off, their head simply rolls off and they cease to exist.
Good times.
